How to Photograph Your BMW Before Requesting an Offer

Updated: Sep 28

Clear, honest photos are one of the fastest ways to get a useful response when you are selling an older BMW. A complete set of images helps an enthusiast buyer understand the model, condition, rust, completeness, access, and parts value without a long round of follow-up questions.
START WITH A CLEAN, WELL-LIT CAR

You do not need to detail the car before taking photos. Remove loose clutter, open the garage door, and use daylight whenever possible. Avoid nighttime photos, heavy rain, strong glare, or filters that hide the true condition. The goal is accuracy, not perfection.
PHOTOGRAPH ALL FOUR CORNERS
Take clear photos of the front, rear, both sides, and all four three-quarter angles. Stand far enough away to keep the complete car in the frame. These wide photos establish the body style, stance, major damage, missing panels, and overall completeness.
SHOW COMMON E30 RUST AREAS
Rust can matter more than mileage on an older BMW. Photograph the rocker panels, jack points, wheel arches, floors, battery tray, trunk wells, rear shock towers, strut towers, and sunroof or drain areas. Include both close-ups and wider views so the location and scale are easy to understand.
DOCUMENT THE ENGINE BAY AND DRIVETRAIN
Include a full engine-bay photo, the VIN label, and close-ups of leaks, damage, or missing components. If the car runs, a short cold-start video is extremely helpful. Photograph the odometer and share what you know about the engine, transmission, differential, and recent work. If the drivetrain has been removed, show it and the empty bay clearly.
SHOW THE INTERIOR CONDITION AND OPTIONS
Photograph the dashboard, seats, door cards, carpets, headliner, steering wheel, center console, rear seat, and trunk. Desirable details such as sport seats, a 13-button OBC, premium audio, unusual interior colors, an aftermarket steering wheel, or complete keys can influence interest and value.
INCLUDE GLASS, WHEELS, AND LOOSE PARTS
Show every wheel, the tires, windshield, rear glass, side glass, lights, mirrors, and any loose parts that belong with the car. Lay small pieces out where they can be seen instead of leaving them buried in the trunk.
PHOTOGRAPH DAMAGE HONESTLY
Do not avoid collision damage, rust holes, cracked glass, missing trim, mold, fire damage, or flood evidence. Honest photos save everyone time and help an experienced buyer evaluate the car realistically. A rough car can still contain valuable E30 parts.
SHOW ACCESS FOR POSSIBLE PICKUP
If the car may need to be transported, include a photo showing its surroundings. Note whether it rolls, steers, and has usable tires, along with any gates, soft ground, low branches, steep grades, or limited trailer access. Your city and state are enough for an initial conversation; the exact address can wait.
WHAT INFORMATION SHOULD ACCOMPANY THE PHOTOS?
Send the year, model, body style, city and state, title status, whether the car runs, drives, and stops, known rust or collision damage, missing parts, your asking price, and any deadline for removal. The more complete the information, the more useful the first response can be.
